Claire Keegan makes moving use of her evocative, minimalist style to broach the well-documented drama of Ireland’s illegitimate mothers. Without appearing to dig too deeply into the peaks and valleys of this topical issue, the book gently nudges us to confront our own courage and the quiet compromises we might make to keep the peace – reminding us that sometimes, we must face the music or risk sweeping difficult truths under the rug.
Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan is a quietly powerful novella which i liked. It captures the weight of moral choices within a beautifully restrained, minimalist style. Furlong’s decision to act is driven by his own humble background and the compassion he feels as a man who was once vulnerable. His courage sets him apart as an empathetic and morally strong character.
Easy to read and not too long, this novel plunges us into the life of an Irish family at Christmas time in the 80's. We discover the joys and sorrows of its daily life in great details from the father's point of view. It also takes place in the South-Eastern of Ireland that remind me little cities i have visited during my travel there. That gives me a better understanding of this country.
